Arkansas Court Allows Medical Marijuana Measure Onto November Ballot

AR Medical Marijuana

The Arkansas Supreme Court decided on October 13 that voters will decide the fate of medical marijuana in the state. The measure is called Issue 6.  Two medical marijuana measures were in question, one still remains tied up in the Arkansas court system.

The approved proposal would allow qualified patients with qualifying conditions to use medical marijuana, according to ABC News. The approved proposal does not allow for home cultivation. The second, still held up in court, would allow for home cultivation as long as a patient lives a specific distance from a dispensary.

Television and radio ads will be airing soon, according to Arkansans United for Medical Marijuana.

Attorney David Couch said, “Now that the last obstacle has been cleared and we know that people will be able to vote on Issue 6, we’ll start our campaign.”

One of the major issues with Issue 6 is its language and that the language used in the measure is not required to include every detail of the amendment.

Associate Justice Courtney Hudson Goodson mentioned that, “We conclude that while inside the voting booth, the voters will be able to reach an intelligent and informed decision for or against The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment of 2016.”

One major obstacle surviving for the state is the opposition of its Republican Governor, Asa Hutchinson, who is the former head of the DEA. Supporting this hurdle is opposition from the Arkansas Attorney General Greg Bledsoe as well.
